A Sample Project: Procedure
The Procedure section for the sample experiment (see Figure 5.3) contains the steps needed to complete the experiment. Figure 5.4 shows the procedure setup. As described in The Scientific Method, a variable is anything that has an effect on the experiment. In the sample experiment, the sun's altitude is measured at specific times during the day. The time of day is the independent, or manipulated, variable. The measured altitude of the sun at this time is the dependent, or responding, variable. All other variables, such as the latitude and season, are the controlled, or constant, variables.
