Backward
Don't miss204 Sticky, Gloppy, Wacky, and Wonderful Experimentsfor this experiment and others.

Purpose
To demonstrate that an image in a plane mirror is reversed.

    Materials
  • mirror
  • index card
  • pencil
Procedure
1. Stand so that you can see your face in the mirror.
2. Hold the card on your forehead and while
looking into the mirror, use the pencil to print your name on the card.
3. Turn the card around and look at what you wrote.

Results
Your name is correct when read in the mirror, but reads backward without the mirror.

Why?
The image seen in a plane mirror is laterally reversed, which means it is reversed from left to right. Since a mirror image is always laterally reversed, any laterally reversed image is called a mirror image.
