Purpose
To compare the size of popped and unpopped corn.
| Procedure |
| 1. |
Open
one of the bags of popcorn and pour it into
the measuring cup. Record the amount of
corn in the bag. |
| 2. |
Adult
step:Place the sealed bag of popcorn in
the microwave and heat it for the length
of time indicated on the bag. |
| 3. |
Allow
the bag to cool for 5 minutes, then remove
it from the microwave and open. CAUTION:
Popcorn from the microwave can be very hot.
Do wait a full 5 minutes to allow it to
cool before opening. |
| 4. |
Measure
the heated popcorn. Do this by filling the
measuring cup with popcorn, then pouring
the popcorn into the bowl. Continue measuring
until all the popcorn has been poured. Add
up the number of cups (ml) of popcorn. |
So Now We Know
When popcorn kernels are heated, they get bigger
because the water inside turns into a gas. This
change of a liquid to a gas is called evaporation.
The popped kernels generally take up about twelve
times as much space as do the unpopped kernels.
