Purpose
To make a star design.

    Materials
  • cutting board
  • knife (to be used only by an adult)
  • apple
  • drinking straw
  • 24-inch (60-cm) piece of yarn

Procedure
1. Adult StepUse the cutting board and knife to cut a slice from the middle of the apple.
2. Notice the five-pointed star design in the center of the slice.
3. Use the straw to make a hole near the edge of the slice.
4. Tie the yarn through the hole and hang the slice where it can dry. It will take 2 to 3 days to dry.
5. When dry, hang the star in your room.

So Now We Know
Stars in the sky look bright and shiny but do not have five points as does your star design. Real stars are round balls of very hot gas. Stars are very big and very bright, but because they are so far away, you see them as tiny bright spots in the sky.
