Jacob performs in community theater and plays the cornet, trumpet, and piano. He likes working with animals and would like to become a veterinarian someday.
Project Graphic
With a lot of wind power evident in his state, Jacob developed an interest in turbines. He wondered whether longer blades would turn a turbine faster and produce more electricity.

Jacob built a wind turbine with magnets on the blades rotating above an induction coil. As the blades spin faster, they produce more electricity. Jacob tested three blade lengths at three wind intensities (as simulated by a hair dryer). His hypothesis was incorrect: at high wind intensity the shortest blade performed best, while at lower wind intensity the medium blade performed best. Jacob thought that the larger blade's higher wind resistance might account for his results.
