Mary Anne is involved in dance and enjoys horseback riding. She hopes to help people as a psychiatrist someday "by knowing more about the brain and its functions." Mary Ann's mentor is one of her teachers, who she describes as "a bundle of enthusiasm."
Mary Anne became interested in the dreaming state of sleep. She met with the director of a university sleep laboratory, who encouraged her to develop a basic background in sleep physiology.
Mary Anne wrote a survey with 54 questions regarding sleep hygiene. She included questions about TV viewing and video game-playing habits. She also included a question to identify children with ADD/ADHD. Parents of 125 children responded to the survey. After analyzing her data, she found that children with ADD/ADHD were less likely to stick to a bedtime routine, less likely to fall asleep within 20 minutes, and less likely to sleep soundly, among other differences. They were also more likely to watch TV immediately prior to bed.
