What have you been doing since YSC?
I have continued my research activities during each of my four high school years. In my freshman year, I developed a method to identify unique virus strains using polymerase chain reactions and electrophoresis. In my sophomore year, I evaluated various procedures to eradicate spore-forming bacteria (such as anthrax). I researched angiogenesis inhibitors during my junior year. Each project was done both at my high school and at various college laboratories. I won various regional and state honors for all these projects, including first place (medicine) in the most recent State of Florida Science and Engineering Fair. I have entered my angiogenesis inhibitor project into this year's Intel Science Talent competition. I am researching molecular epidemiology of antibiotic-resistant bacteria for my senior project.
When you're not studying, what do you like to do?
Outside of scientific research, I continue to play on the high school varsity soccer team and am a varsity cheerleader. I graduate high school this May. I also work as a preschool teacher.
How did participating in YSC affect you?
It gave me the confidence to continue. It showed me that hard work does pay off.
What are your career goals?
I plan to pursue a career in medicine or science.
What's your favorite memory of YSC?
I liked the people who I competed with. I liked working with the team in the challenges. I liked winning.
How did you first become interested in science?
I have always been an inquisitive person. I started competing in elementary school (third grade) and have enjoyed it from the beginning.
Who is your science hero and why?
My dad is my science hero. He loves to work on science projects with me, and he also has an inquisitive mind.
What advice would you offer to someone hoping to participate in YSC?
Even though the efforts may seem tedious, it is well worth it. Even if you do not win, the competition is worth the trip.
