For as long as I can remember, I've been interested in science, nature, and how things work. When I was young, I collected insects, explored the world with a microscope, and played with my chemistry set. My interests were also sparked by reading Scientific American, National Geographic, and biographies of scientists and explorers.

Today I study the molecular biology of viruses. In my laboratory, my students and I have identified a new baculovirus, or insect virus, that can increase the infected species. We are studying this problem to understand some
of the ways that viruses interact with the cells and organisms that they infect. We can use this knowledge to solve some practical problems. For example, we might be able to use this information to develop safer methods for controlling insect pests—and reduce pollution from agricultural pesticides. It may also give us new ideas for combating viruses that infect humans and domestic animals.

I hope my research will lead to a better understanding of how viruses work and eventually to new methods of preventing or treating viral diseases in humans. But my biggest dream is that my students will become good scientists and go on to make great discoveries themselves.
