I have always had a fascination for all living things. I became curious about the natural world as a young boy growing up on a small farm in Colorado. I was surrounded by many different plants and animals, and filled with questions: What were all the different parts of a flower? Where does blood come from? I even had boxes filled with insects stuck on pins. We were too far from any city to have television reception, so books and libraries were very important.

In college, I studied zoology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I became interested in how cells help us understand living things, which I continued to study in graduate school at Boston University.

In addition to studying plants in the Jenkins Arboretum's greenhouse, I have also participated in a plant-hunting expedition in China. My proudest achievement was working on this expedition to collect seed from species of wild rhododendrons that grow in China.
