The Politics Room : 1962

  • March 5, 1962 : In Griggs v. Allegheny County the Supreme Court ruled that airports must compensate people living in the near vicinity for noise and vibrations.

  • June 25, 1962 : By a vote of 6 to 1, the Supreme court bans prayer in public schools.

  • October 1, 1962 : President Kennedy calls on the U.S. Army to force the University of Mississippi to allow James H. Meredith to enroll as the first African American at the University of Mississippi at Oxford.
