The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) was organized to provide assistance to citizens who are victims of natural disasters. In the past decade, FEMA has managed to evolve from an agency run by politicians to a well-run emergency response organization, and now a disaster mitigation team. And they have done it by emphasizing teamwork with state and local governments, as well as with other federal agencies. An important part of the organization’s disaster response are its Disaster Assistance Employees - people across the country who act as reservists for FEMA. When disaster strikes, FEMA immediately calls its reservists into action. Hear from FEMA reservists who have worked in the aftermath of some of our worst hurricanes, such as Floyd and Opal.

Secrets of the Stone Age: The Human History

Friday, January 18, 10-11 pm EST
Saturday, January 19, 1 – 2 am EST
On TLC

Scientist Richard Rudgley investigates the truth about Neanderthal society, claiming that early man's amazing ingenuity created the conditions for Egypt's rise to international power. Evidence from the greatest archaeological sites demonstrates ancient cultures’ skills in medicine, dentistry, math, astronomy, art, and language, long before the dawn of written history. Rudgley also explores the interspecies relationships between two remaining branches of hominids on the earth 40,000 years ago, Homo neanderthalensis, and Homo sapien. Neanderthals disappeared from the earth sometime after this meeting, and scientists believed that this might have been due to direct conflict between the two species. But Rudgley believes that when the two societies met, they may have had a cultural, social, and possible medical exchange.
