Disney's Activity Center Winnie the Pooh
Rating: four stars
The Bottom Line
Though usability could be better, once kids get to understand the different ways to play, they'll find the mix of activities fun and entertaining. Graphics and animations are excellent — kids will easily be whisked away into the Hundred Acre Wood. This title is best for kids ages 5-7, as preschoolers will find many activities too challenging.

Disney's Activity Center Winnie the Pooh Product Overview
This activity center contains a mix of styles of games hosted by and starring Winnie the Pooh and friends. Set in the Hundred Acre Wood, there are 6 activities to discover:
  • Read the Story, Find the Bees is an electronic storybook that has an added activity attached to it. Before the story begins, Pooh asks kids to find a certain number of bees within the pages of the story.
  • Come Fly a Piglet, an arcade activity, has children guiding Pooh and Piglet safely to Owl's house. With 3 levels of difficulty, kids need to help make their favorite characters' ride in the wind a less bumpy one.
  • In Tigger's Hillside Hop, kids help characters hop around the hillside collecting party items. This can be played with a friend, if so desired, and on any of 3 difficulty levels.
  • In Heffalumps and Woozles, Pooh is dreaming up all sorts of Heffalumps and Woozles! Kids can either create their own wacky combinations from the floating pieces -- legs, faces, heads, and more, or try to recreate the creature featured in Pooh's thought bubble.
  • In Eeyore's House Hunt, kids help Eeyore build a bridge across the flooded Hundred Acre Wood.
  • Decorating Owl's House is a simple click-and-drag activity that has children pulling items out of Owl's boxes and placing them wherever they want in Owl's house.
All activities are based on the story "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day". Kids can follow along with the story in the electronic storybook activity as each page is read to them and a short animated clip ensues. Each page contains some clickables with a few different results for each click. Pooh asks kids to find a number of hidden bees in the story pages before the book begins. This task is not as easy as it sounds! The bees are little and there isn't a discernible pattern (for example, one bee per page) to make it more straightforward. Instead, there can be many pages with no bees at all, and others with two. It would have been nice to be able to see subtotals of how many bees are found as players work through the story.

Come Fly a Piglet was a favorite activity, and one 3 year-old couldn't get enough of making Piglet say "oooh" when he bumped into birds and balloons.

While some activities are just right for the suggested age group, others require more advanced skills. Don't be surprised if an older sibling (6-8 year old) joins in for a bit! The Winnie the Pooh theme might seem babyish to them, but some arcade-style games on higher levels will challenge them too. Instructions were not always clear, and kids wondered how to play some of the activities the first few times they played.

Our copy came with a bonus CD-ROM Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too Animated Storybook.

Technically Speaking
Minimum requirements are Windows 95/98, a Pentium 133 processor, 32 Mb RAM, and 4X CD ROM. Mac users require an iMac G3 processor with 32 Mb RAM, System 8.1, and at least 4X CD ROM.

Skills Covered
mouse skills, hand-eye coordination, logic, creativity, matching, spatial skills

Educational Value
As is generally expected with activity center software, focus is primarily on fun as opposed to academics. Of all activities, Eeyore's House Hunt requires the most thinking skills. Younger kids may pick up some mouse and keyboard skills.

Entertainment Value
Animation quality is top-notch, and the good variety of games will help ensure that all sorts of kids will be entertained.

Design
This title requires your computer to be set at 256 colors, which can be an annoyance. Navigation could have been better as well. Kids were confused the first few times they played. While some activities (like the Decorating Owl's House) are simple, others are challenging for little ones. For example, kids need to use specific letters on the keyboard to make Tigger and Rabbit hop in one activity (on-screen arrows would have been less confusing), and it can be difficult for young kids to "catch" the fast-moving Heffalump and Woozle body parts in another activity. While older kids may enjoy these, they might think they are too old for the Winnie the Pooh theme. As well, less patient kids will get frustrated in the storybook activity, as the only way to cut out the animations is by hitting the escape key, often a few times.

Replayability
The variety of activities helps boost replay value.

Dollar Value
Our copy came with a bonus CD-ROM that makes the program even more worthwhile.
