The beauty of the Geomag line of building toys lies in its endless combinations and the timeless appeal of magnets! Geomag sets are comprised only of spheres and colorful rods, but the creativity they inspire is far from simple. Children can build basic objects or complex mathematical models with Geomag, and most will spend a lot of time fascinated with the set's possibilities.
The set's rods have south-polarized magnets and north-polarized magnets on each end. The magnets are powerful, and the entire set is robust certainly designed to last. Children can construct simple, two-dimensional objects as well as more complex three-dimensional structures (such as a house or pyramid). Suggested constructions are included, which captured the interest of kid testers for awhile, but the most fun came from their desire to experiment. Kids can even build designs with the fridge door as the base.
The set we tested is from the company's "toy line" and includes 42 pieces. Although there are four different rod colors available (primary colors), each set includes only one color. Other sets with more pieces are available (86-, 130-, and 184-piece sets, for example), and recommended for families who know they will want to build more complex structures. Although 42 pieces sounds like plenty, both rods and spheres are included in the count. The set is extraordinarily appealing to all ages. Adults will most certainly want to join in the fun, making Geomag an excellent family activity.
Geomag is a no-fail building set because the magnets hold everything intact (which eliminates the frustration of building things that can be easily knocked over) and there are no "mistakes". Due to small parts, the set is not recommended for children under the age of three.
Geomag fascinates children and adults of all ages. It makes for a quiet activity that inspires imagination and teaches children some basics about magnetism and polarity.
