With this project, children design and grow a miniature garden that combines real plants and fantasy touches inspired by the Dr. Seuss classic, The Loraxa book that holds a powerful message about ecology. As the story goes, a villain destroys a wonderful place that is home to fantastical Truffula trees and Humming-Fish, amongst other things. Just when all hope seems lost, readers discover that the Lorax has saved a Truffula seed. Children can relive the classic story in a small way by planting and caring for their own special "Lorax garden" with this fun kit that might help personalize the story's message for young children.
The set comes with a planter, soil, wheat grass and bean sprout seeds, Humming-Fish and Lorax replica figurines, colored gravel, and supplies to construct Truffula trees. Kids can make up to three Truffula trees by twisting pipe cleaners together and adding "fluff" (colored feathers). The trees need to be attached to the bottom of the planter with clay before kids add soil and seeds to their garden. Children can get creative with some designing and planning when it comes to adding seeds, gravel, and the cute figurines to the planter. Once complete, the fantasy garden needs a little water and attention, and before long, it will fill with grass and bean sprout leaves.
Because of the choice of plants in the Lorax garden, the set is very easy to care for and children don't have to wait too long before they see some green. The grass will need to be trimmed from time to time, and the plants don't require too much water. In fact, over-watering is not recommended. This set is a special project that parents can introduce in conjunction with the Dr. Seuss book, or without. Either way, children will take pride in their specially designed garden.
