This free-roaming PlayStation game is designed to give preschoolers an opportunity to "play" with favorite Teletubbies characters. Play With the Teletubbies for PlayStation is basically the same game as the 1998 CD-ROM of the same name. We found the CD-ROM rather disappointing, mainly because of its counter-intuitive navigation. However, navigation is improved significantly on the Playstation. Note, though, that some fans of the Teletubbies show may still be too young for the game, and many kids who are ready for the controls will already find the Teletubbies too "babyish".
Kids get to choose their favorite Teletubbies character and maneuver him or her through Teletubby Land – over the hills that are spotted with patches of flowers and rabbits, and through the Tubbytronic Superdome. Navigation involves moving the control knob left, right, up, and down. Kids activate the activities by pressing on any of the control buttons. The game is very open-ended – children need not follow a sequence or predefined route, a feature that is appropriate for the target age group.
There are 11 activities to discover, one of which involves activating and then watching some of the videos that are a big feature of the television show -- on the screen of their Tubby friend's tummy, of course. Kids can help their Teletubby make a gooey Tubby Custard mess, guide their Tubby around as he/she leaves a trail of pink custardy footprints, and then watch as Noo-Noo (the lovable vacuum) cleans the mess up. At the Tubbytronic Superdome Control Panel, kids can experiment with buttons that light up and make fun sounds. When children discover the Magic Drum, they can make their Teletubby play with it, then watch as magical things like rabbits and flowers appear. They can control a toy train’s speed and direction, and even make it toot. The hiding game involves trying to locate the other Teletubby characters who are playing a game of hide and seek, and when kids succeed, the Teletubbies take part in the show’s trademark "big hug".
Sometimes, kids get stuck in an activity longer than they want to be. Though there is a method of escaping an activity (pressing the Start then the Select buttons), it is difficult for the target audience to remember to do on their own. For example, the cloud activity in which children experiment with musical clouds is defaulted to last for 2 minutes. If a child has activated it accidentally and wants to exit it before those 2 minutes are up, they will require assistance from parents or older siblings.
While this game provides an interesting orientation to the PlayStation controller and a pressure-free environment in which preschoolers can explore, some kids might find the program’s lack of a mission or overall purpose off-putting. Parents who aren’t particularly fond of the Teletubbies in general will likely find this video game just as "pointless" as the television show on which it is based. Be sure to read through the jewel case insert and help your young child discover all that the program has to offer. Left to their own resources, children won’t easily uncover the activities. With this extra effort, however, the game has its merits. It helps instill confidence in young children who are anxious to emulate their older siblings by mastering the PlayStation controller, as any push of a button or knob will elicit an onscreen response. Note, though, that it isn’t going to appeal to every family. We expect that parents will either love or hate it – not much in between.
Will preschoolers play with this game "again, again"? The answer to this question will depend on whether the game’s target audience gets help from older members of the family. Some preschoolers anxious to get their hands on controllers that have previously been their older siblings’ exclusive domain will enjoy their newfound abilities. Parents who bemoan the time their kids spend with video game controllers in hand, however, might question whether they want to hasten the whole process for their little ones.
This game is very reasonably priced at a suggested retail price of $20 US.
