Centipede

The Bottom Line
Centipede features two modes of play. The Arcade mode, while an updated version, captures the feel of the original 1980's game, and Adventure takes kids right into the heart of the action into 3D worlds, meeting face-to-face with the deadly bugs. Either mode involves high arcade action.

image Product Overview
This title is a remake of the early 1980's classic arcade game Centipede. There are 2 gameplay modes:
  • Arcade is the classic game of Centipede with a brand new look and feel. The object of the game is to get the high score, and players use the Shooter to fire at the centipedes that make their way down the board, spiders, fleas, scorpions, and mushrooms.
  • In Adventure Mode, players become part of the board and direct their Shooter through dangerous lands, collecting power-ups, and destroying the centipedes as well as a whole array of nasty targets. The object of the game is to save the inhabitants of Weedom from an invasion of Centipedes and a slew of dangerous insects. The ultimate goal is to destroy Queen Pede.
The arcade mode is really quite fun, and very reminiscent of the original coin-operated arcade version. Where the PC version of Centipede lacks the original "feel" of the game when using the keyboard, this PlayStation version makes you feel like you're back in the arcade. You'll have to think fast and have very quick reflexes to get very far in this mode, making quick decisions -- shooting down mushroom trails that scorpions have left behind, dodging and/or shooting the spiders, and, of course, killing the centipede.

Since kids won't feel nostalgic, and many don't much see the point of arcade-style games with an objective that is simply getting the high score, Adventure Mode will be the main attraction. This mode of play takes you right into the action, travelling through 3D worlds on the Shooter, going face-to-face with the enemies -- insects of all kinds. Besides the standard spiders, centipede, fleas, and scorpions, Hasbro has added all-new breeds of deadly insects such as the enforcer flies, mortar bugs, and a whole lot more.

The 3D worlds are graphically rich and include Weedom where the insects are set on destroying Wee villages and towns, Frostonia the magical mountainous region, Infernium where the precious Star Crystals reside, and Evile, the dark and foreboding land that Wee citizens fear, and the home of Queen Pede.

Testers had loads of fun dodging and shooting down the enemies and mushrooms, and saving the Wee people. Though Adventure mode is a platform game of sorts, it still plays very much like an arcade game. It features constant action -- players are in a perpetual state of looking over their shoulders.
