Kids Tetris

The Bottom Line
The arcade game of Tetris is brought down successfully to a young child's level. Though the program lacks some depth, it does provide entertainment value while helping kids work on their spatial puzzle skills.

image Product Overview
That wildly addictive game of Tetris is now in a kiddie version! Kids work on their spatial skills as they attempt to piece together different shaped blocks to form complete rows. While classic Tetris involves variations of 4 blocks, this version starts kids off with 2 blocks, gradually takes them to 3 block variations, then eases them into the classic game (just at a slower pace).

Kids have the choice of playing the same game in 4 different environments -- the Circus, Firehouse, Laboratory, or Haunted House. One or two players can play, and kids need to complete a certain amount of rows to "win" each mini-game. Once they have won a number of mini-games, they are treated to a screen that comes alive with clickables. A printer icon also appears, and kids can print out certificates and coloring pages.

Players get a choice of starting with 2, 3, or 4 block pieces. Gameplay gets progressively more challenging, but adjusts appropriately as well when a child is struggling.

The two-player mode can be played with one child using the arrow keys, or specially-designated letter keys, on the keyboard, and the other using the mouse. A nice touch for this mode involves players working together to help a yellow block reach the top.

The animated block hosts are cute and colorful and kids were immediately drawn to the game. Although this title is rather limited -- there is not much else to do except play the same game of Tetris in different environments -- it does provide an introduction to the game. Kid testers were thrilled to be able to play a game they see their parents and older siblings play.

Technically Speaking
Minimum requirements are Windows 95/98, a Pentium 133 processor, 32 Mb RAM, and 8X CD ROM drive. DirectX 6.0 or higher required (included).

Skills Covered
spatial skills, puzzles.

Educational Value
Children must decide how to fit the different shapes to avoid leaving spaces and complete lines. Will rotating the shape help?

Entertainment Value
We would have liked to see more to do. However, kids will be entertained by the colorful hosts, environments, and the game itself. The two player option is fun as kids work together for a common goal.

Design
Playing this game is straightforward. Difficulty levels can be chosen, and they adjust automatically. In order to play a two-player game, one child will have to use the keyboard controls, which may be confusing at first for younger players.

Replayability
Replay value will vary depending on the child. Some children find this style of game addictive.

Dollar Value
Suggested retail price is $29.95 US. Because the game lacks some depth, a price tag of $19.95 would probably be more appropriate.
