image Product Overview
em@il Battleship allows for a turn-based game of Battleship to be played via email. The owner of the CD-ROM simply sets up a game, sends an email message to player #2, and the game begins! The second player doesn't need to own the CD-ROM in order to play.

There are 2 types of games to play:

  • Classic Battleship is played like the traditional game we all grew up with --the object is to sink all 5 of the opponent's ships. Each player chooses the (secret) positions of their ships on their gameboard grid. Then, players take turns "firing" at each other's grids until they hit and sink each other's ships. There are 3 different assault types to choose from (including the option to fire 5 shots per turn, making for a faster game).
  • Fleet Commander is an advanced variation of classic Battleship. This game allows the option for both players to create their own fleet. Each ship can move multiple spaces, turn, fire, and use a unique special action. Note that your opponent needs to have a Windows 95/98 based email program in order to play this style of Battleship.

Your opponent's turn comes in the form of an attachment to the email and is sent through Hasbro's server. Players have the option to send a text message along with their play.

Although the classic Battleship gameplay mode is pretty much hit-and-miss, Fleet Commander adds a new dimension altogether. Strategy enters the picture as players must get to know the characteristics of each of their ships, and they can move them as well!

Technical Note: Some email programs (such as Eudora) will rename each incoming "turn" attachment. In order to get around this, we recommend deleting the attachment immediately after playing a turn.

Technically Speaking
Minimum requirements are Windows 95/98, a 486 /66 (Pentium 90 processor recommended), 8 Mb RAM (16 Mb RAM recommended), and 2X CD-ROM (4X CD ROM recommended). Internet connection is required, as well as a Windows 95/98-based email account that uses file attachments.

Educational Value
Lots of prereading practice, although it doesn't really teach as much as simply asking questions. Kids are given encouragement to learn.

Entertainment Value
This game is surprisingly fun to play via email! It also helps people keep in touch — text messages can be sent along with the player's next move.

Design
We love the fact that there is an option to send 5 hits at one time, as well as the innovative variation of the classic game. The game is almost effortless to set up and play.

Replayability
If you enjoy this style of game, playing it through email is probably easier than the board game. I expect this title would have long-term appeal. Note that Hasbro is not committed to keeping the servers running beyond Oct.1, 2000.

Dollar Value
Suggested retail price is $14.95 US.
