The Bottom Line
Design problems notwithstanding, this program will captivate young girls approximately 5-8 for at least a few sittings. The graphics are impressive, and though there are not a lot of activities, the games presented here are quite enjoyable.

image Product Overview
For any little girl who dreams of being a princess, Disney's Princess Fashion Boutique is here. Now she can not only dress up like a princess, she can create a virtual model of herself! All you need is a scanned photo of your little darling, and you can drop her face onto the 3-D model and work from there. Alternatively, she can create a likeness using the tools provided.

This title is filled with stuff little girls dream of, including their favorite classic Disney princesses Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, each with their own unique magical worlds.

First stop will be the Imagine Me Mirror. With a cute magic wand as a cursor, girls will create their own virtual model and "become" a princess. Parents will need to import a picture (preferably a close-up of a face) from a jpg or bmp format. Almost as much fun is creating their own face, selecting the eyes, face shape, skin color, and hair color and style. Body type is also selected, and, happily, there is a range of types to choose from -- not just super-thin Barbie-like body types.

Next, it's off to the Princess Dressing Room to outfit their virtual model. Here, girls will find a selection of tops, sleeves, bows, gloves, wigs, hats, crowns, and jewelry, all ready to mix and match. Fabric swatches with different colors and patterns can be used for the gowns. Best of all, kids can collect magical textures, jewelry, hats, crowns, and dresses in the Enchanted Worlds to add to their collection in the Dressing Room.

Girls won't want to miss the Enchanted Worlds. Cinderella's Gardens, Snow White's Forest, and Sleeping Beauty's Lake are all magical environments filled with clickables and different collectibles and surprises each visit. Kids will find special textures, accessories, dresses, and even stickers that they can use in the other activities.

Up to 20 different outfits can be saved to be used in the Star of the Story. This activity allows kids to create princess fairy tales using virtual stickers, animations, backgrounds, sounds, music, and text. Children can click on the Art Box to design their own stickers or modify existing ones. Stickers can be rotated, resized, and moved to the front and back. If children place their stickers carefully, they can make a movie. Animations, sound effects, and music are really quite fun! However, the icons could have been more kid-friendly. Little princesses will more than likely need some help getting started.

There's even something special in your little one's future with the Crystal Ball activity. The Crystal Ball icon serves as a portal to the Disney web site where new downloadable outfits and accessories will periodically be made available.

Creations can be printed and/or sent over the Internet as email attachments.

Kid testers were thoroughly delighted seeing their own faces on the 3D model. The program made it easy for parents to add, adjust, and resize the photo images using the tools provided. The results were excellent.

Our copy came with a bonus CD-ROM Disney's Print Studio Little Mermaid. This allows children the opportunity to create printable banners, placemats, greeting cards, postcards, calendars, growth charts, invitations, stickers, coloring pages, and more, featuring Ariel and friends.

Technically Speaking
Minimum requirements are Windows 95/98, a Pentium 166 processor, 32 Mb RAM, and 4X CD ROM.

Skills Covered
creativity, story-making, imagination.

Educational Value
This title is meant to be 'fun' and not explicitly educational. However, a story-making activity adds some educational value.

Entertainment Value
Loads of value in this category! This is an excellent title for playing, creating, and having fun. It will keep little girls happily clicking and creating for some time.

Design
The interface takes a little getting used to. Parents will likely need to refer to the manual and show younger girls in the suggested age group all of the possibilities in the program. The interface is not entirely intuitive.

Replayability
Little girls will be busy with this title for hours. The idea of downloading new dress designs from the Internet is great, and a trend we would like to see more of. It adds to the excitement and extends the life of the program. Different surprises and "collectibles" await in the enchanted worlds, keeping a child's interest high.

Dollar Value
Our copy came with a bonus CD-ROM that makes the program even more worthwhile. Suggested retail price is $29.99 Cdn/$20 US.
