image Product Overview
Hockey is the latest sport in the excellent Backyard Sports line, a series of sports simulations specially tailored for children approximately ages 6 to 11. Plenty of options are featured, including multiple ways to play, various customization features, and multi-player options. All of these factors contribute to a product that can be enjoyed by children of varying ages, abilities, and interests.

The players in this program are all kids. Children choose between familiar characters from the series—the Backyard Kids—with slightly new looks and from 10 kid-versions of NHL pro players (including the likes of Brian Leetch and Joe Sakic). Choices for teams and logos include NHL ones and unique options such as the Abominable Polar Bears. Choosing players is exciting—kids can read player stats and bios, hear the players speak, and even create their own custom player (they choose the player's appearance and customize their skills). Children learn about the different players' skills and idiosyncracies. For example, Vicki is a terrific skater but lacks power, while Amir plays best when he is on the same line as his brother, Achmed.

Younger children, those new to the game, or players who prefer casual game-play can choose practice mode to simply practice their shots on goal in a one-on-one setting or a single pickup game. This latter option allows children to either bypass the selection of teams and players (random teams appear) and play immediately, or to simply enjoy a simple game that does not count towards a season. Season Play requires creating a coach and drafting players to move through the BHL season. Choosing a good mix of players is especially important in Season Play.

Although many kids will opt to play against computer opponents, two human players are able to play against each other. This is made possible with the option to configure the game using the mouse, keyboard, or gamepad. This way, even if players do not own a gamepad controller, one child can control his/her team with the mouse and the other child with computer keyboard controls.

A terrific bonus game of air hockey can be found in Practice Mode. This is a great diversion, and the option of having multiple pucks roll onto the rink is a fun variation on this popular game.

There are fun extras that add to the entertainment value of the program. Sunny Day adds her play-by-play commentary and Buddy Cheque offers color commentary. At the end of a game, stars of the game are selected. The program loosely follows NHL rules with age-appropriate modifications (such as the choice of 3, 5, or 10 minute periods), ensuring that children learn some official rules and have fun at the same time. At the end of one game, for example, Buddy Cheque says, "Brought to you by 110 Percent Juice—the only juice in the world that defies mathematics." The controls of Backyard Hockey are a little trickier to understand than those of previous titles in the series, but all things considered, this program is an excellent sports simulation. The interface and graphics are noticeably improved.

Technically Speaking
Minimum system requirements are Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, Pentium II 266 MHz, 32 MB RAM (64 MB for XP), 8X CD-ROM, and 40 MB of hard drive space.

Skills Covered
Kids develop strategic thinking skills and learn the rules and strategies of the game of hockey.

Educational Value
The amount of thinking skills required to play the program depends on the level of a child's involvement. Kids who play Season Play mode need to draw up strategies in order to successfully lead their team through a season. Even casual play, however, helps acquaint kids with the rules and strategies of the game of hockey, and drives home the message that cooperation and team spirit are essential to playing a sport. In addition, children who belong to a real sports team are given a unique opportunity to visualize the game and team as a whole as they take on the role of coach.

Entertainment Value
Kids can read players' stats, hear them chat, create their own players, enjoy fun commentary, and more, with this entertaining program. The games are a little difficult to control at first, but once understood, children will have a great time. The bonus Air Hockey game is a terrific diversion.

Design
Plenty of options allow kids of varying ages, abilities, and preferences to enjoy the program. The game can be played using either the mouse, keyboard, or a gamepad—or more than one of these options when two human opponents play. The controls are a little tricky to learn at the beginning, but they are manageable. Left-handed children are accommodated as well.

Replayability
Because the game can be played in many different ways, its appeal is rather wide-ranging. Children who select Season Play, which involves a longer commitment than other modes of play, take part in a goal-oriented program that is pleasantly addictive. The opportunity to quickly play a pick-up game, to practice one-on-one shots, and to enjoy the bonus game of air hockey all contribute to a product that is accessible and attractive over time.

Dollar Value
This CD-ROM carries a suggested retail price of $19.99 US.
