Rating: rating
The Bottom Line
This especially entertaining video celebrates self-expression through dance. Children are introduced to different dance styles and moves through charming dance-themed Sesame Street vignettes. Best of all, viewers are encouraged and inspired to get up and "feel the beat" in their own unique way.

image. Product Overview
Dancing comes naturally to us all, and yet some kids feel a little shy about expressing themselves through dance. This charming video celebrates dance in all of its forms — whether it's a structured dance, celebratory dance, or a just-for-fun dance. This is the first time Zoe, a female Sesame Street Muppet, takes on a starring role in a direct-to-video release. Zoe has a dance class with Paula Abdul, which sets up the story line for Zoe's Dance Moves.

The video features Zoe and Paula Abdul working hard at learning some dance steps and choreographing dances for a show. Little viewers are treated to some excellent vignettes — all dance-themed — culled from Sesame Street episodes. Zoe and Paula provide commentary for some of these video clips. Later in the show, children and Elmo join in on the fun, and the finale features a hilarious dance show put on by the group.

Some of the featured dances include an African celebration dance, hip-hop, an Asian dance (using sticks) that welcomes visitors, a Korean dance that celebrates spring, and ballet. All of these elements, introduced in the vignettes, are incorporated into the dance show. Of course, Zoe loves ballet — her pink tu-tu provides a clue — but she is keen on trying out all the different styles. Zoe doesn't always get the dance moves just right, but she is encouraged to keep practicing after her fumbles. She creates her own Silly Willy Nilly dance that is a scream. Viewers watch as animated birds dance to match the pace of African drums, grasp the concept of "fluid" movements, and learn that they can tell a story through dance.

Besides the unforced message that dancing is natural and fun, perhaps the biggest benefit of this video is the fact that it inspires viewers to get up and dance. Whether they follow the steps along with the video or create their own unique moves, the video has done its job. Although preschoolers will be enthralled, this video has a broader appeal than many Sesame Street videos. Children as old as 6-8 will enjoy Zoe's Dance Moves, and, although the starring muppet is female, the video features both boys and girls dancing along.

The DVD edition includes chapter selections, an interview with Paula Abdul, and a bonus audio CD sampler entitled "Hot! Hot! Hot! Dance Songs" for fun away from the TV.
