This two-disc DVD set uses a creative and modern approach to introducing children to French as a second language. Short, interesting segments and a fair amount of humor help to enliven a subject that is too often presented in a dry manner. This interactive set will complement children's French courses and teach kids many useful communication tips.
The first disc, Part 1, is divided into a series of lessons that begin with the French alphabet, move on to small talk and gender, introduce pronouns and adjectives, and explore French vocabulary words, to name a few. Each lesson ends with an optional interactive quiz. Review Conversations are included for extra reinforcement, and a final exam tests skills learned.
Part 2 brings foreign language learning to a slightly more complex level with lessons about particular verbs and tenses, more greetings, common questions, idioms, irregular verbs, conversation used while shopping and with regards to health and nutrtion, direct and indirect objects, and so forth. Again, review quizzes and conversations are interactive and help to reinforce the lessons, and a final exam can be taken. Tips for communicating effectively are extremely helpful, and the same engaging format is used.
Some of the content is available in VHS format, but the DVD set offers some key advantages. Tests and quizzes are helpful learning tools and lend an interactivity to the program that is invaluable. Children can easily select the lessons they need and review segments when necessary.
This set's main strengths lie in its interactive approach and uniquely modern and engaging format. The program uses a number of different actors and actresses for variety and is comprised of short, snappy segments. Kids can rewind and repeat key lessons, and are encouraged to do so. The learning content is strong and the tips are helpful. Some of the actors' accents are a little off, and this is the main weakness of the set.
