The following questions appear onscreen in the video. Feel free to integrate them into your lesson plan as needed.


 
Part I
Questions to consider before watching the video:
  • Think about what it means to be a member of an elite group in a society.
  • As you watch the program, note the rules, traditions, and structures that set the Jewish high priests apart from the other classes. Pay attention to how they maintained their aristocratic position.
Questions to consider after watching the video:
  • The Jewish culture in Jesus' time associated illness and affliction with a lack of spiritual purity. Anyone considered impure was excluded from society. Discuss the circumstances under which people are shunned in our society today.
  • How might Jesus approach this issue today?
Suggested activity
Create a map of Israel and its neighbors. Label the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. Indicate areas that were important during Jesus' lifetime and why.
 
Part II
Questions to consider before watching the video:
  • Recall historic figures who practiced forms of nonviolent resistance or protest. As you watch the program, consider how their strategies for making changes compared with those of Jesus.
  • Why do you think Jesus chose the path of nonviolence? Was his form of protest effective?
Questions to consider after watching the video:
  • Discuss the ways in which Jesus challenged the social structure and rules of Jewish society. How do the stories of Jesus illustrate his social activism?
  • Think about the parable of the Good Samaritan. What are the social and political messages of this story?
Suggested activity
Plan and write the script for a skit that dramatizes a modern version of the Good Samaritan parable. Then, perform the skit for your class.
