Landscape Ecologist & Cat Specialist
Dr. Jim Sanderson is a landscape ecologist at the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS), part of Conservation International in Washington, DC. He participates in biodiversity monitoring projects around the world, particularly those that rely on camera photo trapping and radio-telemetry to track wildlife. Jim studies small cats, in particular. Their movements help scientists understand habitat fragmentation and landscape connectivity. He is also an active member of the International Union of Conservation Nations (IUCN) Cat Specialist group.
Career Path: Jim received his Doctorate from the University of New Mexico. He was a mathematician in his first career and chose ecology for his second career. Jim thrives on both the mental and physical challenges of his job. He has successfully tracked and photographed the rarest cat on earth: the Andean Mountain cat. He also sports an equally rare tattoo: the paw print of the very same cat.
